Abstract (ERIC 5-Element Standard)

The purpose of this methodological guide and empirical evaluation is to establish best practices for long-term digital preservation, file size optimization, and cryptographic access governance across academic libraries, institutional repositories, and public sector archives. The methodology evaluates 240 heterogeneous documents across DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, PNG, and legacy PDF formats (DS-4) migrated into ISO 19005-1 (PDF/A-1b) and ISO 19005-2 (PDF/A-2b) archival standards using browser-based conversion pipelines. Quantitative metrics assess font subset embedding, device-independent ICC color profile normalization, removal of external dynamic references, Deflate stream compression ratios, AES-256 encryption overhead, and Section 508 screen-reader tag preservation. Results demonstrate a mean size reduction of 72.0 percent under web/archive compression presets while maintaining 100 percent ISO 19005 conformance in automated validation and preserving visual structural similarity (SSIM > 0.99). Implications for library and information science (LIS) curricula and institutional archivists include a standardized workflow for preparing theses, dissertations, and ERIC submissions. Additional materials include 6 tables, 35 references, archival checklists, and 200 embedded URI links.
